Will my device still operate if input voltage will end up over 10 V?

Latest Updated:12/01/2011

Question:

This question is about the input voltage. In the uPC177 comparator, the common-mode input voltage range is 0 to V+- 1.5 V. I'm using my device on a power supply of V+ = 12 V (single power supply), so I think I can use an input voltage of up to 10.5 V.
I'm using the circuit shown on the left. When the reference voltage is 10 V, the input voltage (voltage to be compared) will end up over 10 V; will my device still operate?c177-2.gif

Answer:

Yes, as long as the voltage input to one of the input pins is within the common-mode input voltage range (in this case, the non-inverting input pin), your device will operate normally. In your case, a voltage in the range of 0 to 36 V can be input to the other input pin.
